I’d post the whole video of the talk I gave on reading the Quran at TEDxRainier last weekend, but since it will apparently be a week or two until it’s available, here’s a couple of still shots for now.
That’s me onstage at Benaroya’s Nordstrom Recital Hall, right at the start of my talk. What I’m saying:
You may have heard about the Quran’s idea of paradise being seventy-two virgins, and I promise I will come back to those virgins. But in fact here in the Northwest we’re living pretty close to the real Quranic idea of paradise, defined thirty-six times as “gardens watered by running streams.”
Since I live on a houseboat on the running stream of Lake Union, this makes perfect sense to me. But the thing is, how come it’s news to most people…?
I did come back to the virgins in the end. And the audience gave me a standing O. Which felt great. How great? This is me after the talk, hugged by chef provocateur Michael Hebb of One Pot.
The video will be up on The Accidental Theologist as soon as the TEDxRainier folks have it ready, along with the terrific one that followed mine. That was an impassioned and superbly reasoned argument for welcoming immigration from Pramila Jayapal, the executive director of We Are One America — so great that even as I watched it on the monitor backstage, I was cheering her on and waving my arms and applauding as though she could see me. We’ve been hearing so much nonsense about immigration for so long, her talk was like… well, gardens watered by running streams.

Oh, Paradisical One! How very cool and appropriate that it should come to this. Huzzahs and can’t wait to view some actual intellect and sensibilities on my TED network. Hats off (or on, if that’s more a la mode.)
you are rocking, Ms Hazleton!
(I quote your column comparing excerpts from the bible and from the Quran in so many conversations…so relevant, and yet so few of us have any knowledge.)
Oh, the trailer has me drooling for the feature presentation! Good for you, Lesley! I do so love TED talks, and when people talk sensibly about religion and immigration, it’s such a breath of fresh air. The Quran’s take on Paradise reminds me of one of my favorite Biblical passages, from the last chapter of Revelations: “Then he showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.”
Most excellent! I will wait impatiently for the posting of the talk. Love the pictures! Wooo wooo! Tamam
Lesley,
A good job of removing some misconceptions about Islam/Qur’an. Congratulations on your understanding of 3 most widely practiced religions of the world -Judaism, Christianity and Islam which convey the same message time and again. We need more people like you to live here in peace and harmony.
Thank you on a job well done.
Dear Lesley,
Thank you for this most enlightening talk on extinguishing some of the overwhelming ignorance surrounding the Qur’an. You’ve actually read the Qur’an with perhaps better understanding than many Muslims. Posting this talk alone is sometimes enough to challenge the staunchest of islamphobes and perhaps even ‘convert’ them. I congratulate you in spreading peace amongst the uninformed “Blessed are the peacemakers…”
i wish more muslim can view this and ask themselves how have they viewed their world…
as a muslim myself, thank you for sharing your thoughts…
