One of the highlights of last month’s TEDGlobal for me: sharing a stage with Pico Iyer. Like me, the author of ‘The Global Soul‘ and ‘The Man Within My Head’ has a thing for Graham Greene (the man in question). Plus he’s possessed of a certain gentle grace that makes you grateful to see the world through his eyes.
I once spent months researching a book on the idea of home, but couldn’t find the narrative. Iyer did it in 14 minutes with this luminous talk, which just went online. Here it is, for what he calls “the great floating tribe” of those who, with luck, have discovered that “home is not just where you were born, but where you become yourself”

We don’t have to belong to any specific country or place. We belong in the spot and with the people who feel right for us. This is home.
Superb
“Human nature will not flourish, any more than a potato, if it be planted and replanted, for too long a series of generations, in the same worn-out soil. My children have had other birthplaces, and, so far as their fortunes maybe within my control, shall strike their roots into unaccustomed earth.” NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE

Yay, Mr Hawthorne!
I always enjoy your blog posts and I really appreciate the video share. Thank you very much! -Kurt 🙂
Yep, sounds just like you
