Speaking Out

Posted December 18th, 2015 by Lesley Hazleton

Sometimes you have the privilege of getting to say the right thing at the right time, as with this nine-minute talk I gave the other night to a hugely supportive audience of Christians and Muslims at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lynnwood, WA.  The event was called “Love in a Time of Fear,” but I wasn’t afraid, I was angry, and I said so:

Full video of the evening is here, with special thanks to Terry Kyllo of Catacomb Churches and to Jeff Siddiqui for bringing it all together, and to the excellent work of Lutheran Community Services Northwest in support of Syrian refugees.

Thank you, Lesley. This is SO important, and so well said.

You might be interested in this, from my sister Margaret, who converted to Islam before the birth of her first child and is trying to raise a Muslim family in the US: https://medium.com/@coexistmarge/this-time-it-s-different-c0c70fd2db3f#.yo8zgn6nj

Hoping you are well. Thankful you are angry.

Every voice raised is a step towards correction. There may be enough laid back listeners, but being a part of the vocal band is being more responsible, and important in awakening the sense of direction the listeners can take.
You always hit the mark with even few words said, Lesley….
    well spoken!
    Nuzhat.

Bravo, NY!

Lovely to see on the front page of today’s NYT:

That’s Officer Alissa Hernandez proposing to her girlfriend during the 42nd annual gay pride parade, two days after New York state approved same-sex marriage.

Forty-four states still ban gay marriage, but the latest Gallup poll shows 53% of Americans nation-wide support it.  As the world doesn’t fall apart following New York’s decision, expect to see that percentage rise.

Could common sense finally be in the ascendance?

This makes me so happy I could cry – but still I wonder how do we live in a world where 44 states still think it’s okay to gift different rights to different groups – how do people genuinely believe that this is not a civil rights issue? Sigh…

Just curious to find out how Lesley reconciles this awesome display of love with her advocacy of the Quran as a ‘holy book’, when the Quran deprecates homosexuality.

And I am not a christian, so a simple-minded response that claims the Bible also deprecates the Quran would be simple minded.

Advocacy? Reading the Quran equals advocacy of it? Does that mean that reading the Bible equals advocacy of it? Or that the study of prejudice equals advocacy of it? Time to start thinking instead of knee-jerking, Marco.

Laughing at the Homo-Bigots

Posted August 25th, 2010 by Lesley Hazleton

Can humor prevail where reason can’t?   If T.S.Eliot thought so, who am I to argue?  The sign that made me laugh out loud:  “If Liza Minelli can marry two gay men, why can’t I?”

I like the sign that says “would you rather I marry your daughter?”
